Realistic Spyro 1 Map by TastesLikeAnya Realistic Spyro 1 Map by TastesLikeAnya
Unleashing my inner geek, and exercising my love of maps, I decided to make this: The most accurate map possible of the Dragon Worlds for Insomniac's first Spyro game. Because really, who doesn't want a totally awesome Spyro RPG-esque remake? Haha, don't answer that.

I really can't stress that the locations on the map are not arbitrarily placed. Months of research went into studying the game to try and create a map that represents, as accurately as possible, the levels just as they are depicted in the game.

Some of the things I researched include:

Climate
Location of the sun
Heavenly bodies
Geology of formations in the backgrounds
Biology of Dragons

I was originally intending to do all three games, but I found myself having the most fun working out the Spyro 1 map. I also don't have much time with my film and all, so maybe another time.

Also, I want this map to be totally accurate, so if you spot anything you feel isn't right, feel free to comment.

Absolutely beautiful! I was actually thinking of mapping out the Spyro universe when I came across this, and this is much better than I ever could have made. I imagined the Dragon Realms to be along a big sea, but putting them on a continent with a central mountain range explains the odd mountainous and/or snowy levels like Ice Cavern, which seemed to not fit in with Peace Keepers at all.

If you still want criticism... Town Square is surrounded by mountains, so maybe put it closer to (or extend) the mountain range. I also think it's kinda weird Magic Crafters completely bisects the continent, and that Gnasty's World is so far away from the other worlds. I see Gnorc Cove and Twilight Harbor as being big port cities, and it doesn't seem fitting for them to be out in the middle of the ocean. I'd move Crystal Flight to the inlet near Sunny Flight and put Gnasty's World to the north of Magic Crafters. This would also help explain Beast Makers' polluted state - pollution from the neighboring, industrialized Dragon Junkyard would have floated to it.

Oh wow, that would explain the flight world in Beast Makers, too.

I honestly wish I could address more of your points, but it's been so long since I did this, I can't... really remember a lot of stuff. However, they all seem like totally good additions, and if I ever do a second version, I will consider all these points carefully.

I hate to say but with dream weavers it should be broken apart since there are islands that float that's all I gotta say and also this is a good piece

Hey, have you done maps for Spyro 2 and 3 yet? Cause if you did, it would be awesome.

Nah, I was too busy with my film. I was planning on doing them after I finished it, but the worlds in Spyro 2 and 3 seemed far less lore based, and were nowhere near as fun to make as this map, unfortunately. So I don't think I'll ever do them. But who knows.

This is amazing! Love it when people go way over the top with research just for accuracy (I do it too). Awesome job, Insomniac would be proud.

You did a phenomenal job with this — I had always wanted to map the Dragon Worlds years ago, but this is really good

While this is a cool map, the symbol representing the Dream Weavers should be a purple Double-fleur-de-lis symbol. At least that's what I remember. Or did you base the symbol on something else?

I couldn't really see it, to be honest. I got as close to the flag as I could, but it was still terrible far away and dis-joined. Is it a fleur de lis? Because that would make sense, I suppose.

That's right. There's even a Deviation somewhere that has all of the flags in good quality. :)

Interesting. I never though that someone would actually attempt to map the world of the original Spyro game. Still, It's interesting that some of the levels in this are actually located in outer space. I wonder what sort of technology was required for that to happen. :)

This is freaking amazing...

Do you suppose you'll do one of the Dragon Realms in the LOS series? I liked to think that they were the "Forgotten Realms" mentioned in one of the other series for a number of reasons; Moles/Manweersmalls lived in the Forgotten Realms and the lands in the LOS series, but seemingly not in the Dragon Realms of the original series, the Dragon Realms didn't seem to be physically connected to Avalar in the original series, but did in the LOS series, and other stuff like this - besides, what better way to tie the series together?

This is super cool! I love the style and its definitely great to see Spyro fans commit themselves to the gameworld!

I don't know how all the heavenly bodies and such affect the placement and general shape of the map, but if you wouldn't mind I'd like to bring up concerns I have (especially as you've challenged us to do so :P).

For Peace Keepers to be on the east coast and Artisans on the west, it wouldn't make sense for the balloonist to fly over the entire Magic Crafters world. Wouldn't it make more sense to have a body of water between the two worlds? A large lake or bay would suffice and they would still be in the same general areas. As for Magic Crafters, would it be able to move up north a bit or have a lake going through the middle?

Dreamweavers, as the levels contained in it and the homeworld suggest, would be floating above the water I think. Icy Flight could take place beneath it as waterfalls from the homeworld suggest a body of water being present beneath.

I know you've put a lot more thought into it than myself, but these are things I figured you may want to consider in your imagining of the map (if you haven't already). If all my points are dismissed and it wouldn't be too much trouble a brief explanation of my faults/your decisions would be greatly appreciated!

From one Spyro fan to another I'd just again like to say very nice work and that I would recommend this map to any fan of the original Spyro and his universe!

Someone brought up the peace keeper/artisan/balloonist thing before, and I totally agree. If I do another map, (preferably with the other two games), I plan on changing it.
Originally I placed Magic Crafters in the middle to divide the non-nose-horned dragons, and nose-horned dragons, as mountain ranges make good natural evolutionary borders, but I found that they didn't evolve on this landmass later on. I figured I'd keep it, as there has to be some central mountainous range. Mountain ranges are often neighboured with plateaus, too, so it made sense to have the Peace Keepers right next door.

I disagree with moving Magic Crafters up North, as the mountains are massively high, (to the point you can't see the ground), yet contain little snow. I also don't really see the purpose of adding a lake through the middle of the Macic Crafers, but I'd love to hear more.

Thanks, too!

Fair enough.. And thanks for elaborating regarding the evolutionary borders! I hadn't considered that. You failed to mention Dream Weavers though. Can't it be all floaty and what not? ;P

I can't really think of a reason they'd need to be above water rather than land. In my head, the reason for it being over ground was to imply the Dreamweavers dragons lived on the ground like the other dragons, before they were able to invent floating islands and whatnot.

Ah alright, I figured there were simply naturally occurring ancient floating islands. Of course, magic being involved, I suppose they may only have been able to begin floating after the presence of the dragons anyway. This doesn't mean that the whole province can't be floating though. To me I see it as the whole province consisting of the floating islands as even the name suggests: it is particularly whimsical or "dream"-like. It could easily have even started out in the sea or on the ground, and gradually gained the ability to levitate or some such thing. That's my two cents, but you've got great ideas I love listening to!

Still considering building a map composed of all three Playstation 1 games? It'd be epic haha, though I imagine it'd still be a large project to undertake..

Yeah, could be there are more floating Islands. I only mapped out the levels that are in game, though. I think if there were more floating islands it would be more likely there was some archipelago of islands, but with just one floating level I just had it floating above the ground.
And, in the long run I plan to, but I'm far too busy right now.

Sounds good, sounds good.. And that'd be awesome if you ever manage to get the time :P I never imagined that someone would ever be dedicated enough to map the heavenly bodies of the Spyro universe, but you proved me wrong haha! Keep on doing what you do, I look forward to seeing more of your works :D

You have no idea how much I love this. I secretly wish they would remake the original Spyro games to a degree, and if they did, I would try and get them to base theirs off your map.

I think calling the Dream Weavers levels "extraterrestrial" might be a little much, but this is a great map regardless.
(I just always imagined them to be far above the continent in the clouds, as nothing in the setting seems to suggest you're outside the "atmosphere" of the "planet" or whatever Spyro is living on).

I would have liked to make everything on the same planet, but, based on the backgrounds, there is actually no way the levels can logically be anywhere near the planet containing the Spyro 1 world.

I never thought of that.
Hm...so by the backgrounds, do you mean that the sun is different or something like that? Because then I could understand them being different planets.

I do find it kind of weird that Peace Keepers is more or less on the other side of the continent, I always figured given the dock, it was it's own seperate continent.
